Pillow Talk: Lucy Will Show You

The sophisticated creator of insider style guide "Lucy Will Show You", interior design guru and hotel bed connoisseur, Lucy Freedman is our latest Pillow Talk pin-up...

POPLIN designs are inspired by the style of iconic women; if you could dip into anyone's wardrobe, past or present, whose would you choose?

Well, I am a very lucky girl and get to dip into my late grandmother's wardrobe daily. Whether it's a piece of jewellery, shirt, clutch or dress, I pretty much wear something of hers daily. I also love Diane Kruger- that woman has enough Chanel to last a lifetime.

What's on your wishlist from POPLIN?

We are all about the beauty sleep at POPLIN. Are you an owl or a lark? Late sleeper?
Early riser?

I seem to wake up at about 11am ready for a few hours at my macbook. As soon as I'm home by 6pm I'm straight into my Gatsby's.

Favourite thing to...
- Cook in your pyjamas?
Breakfast for dinner

- Read in your pyjamas?
A giant stack of American design mags and colour supplements that I save up from all the hotels I visit.

- Listen to in your pyjamas?
I'm a huge Soundcloud user at the moment. I love finding remixes of all my favourite sons and making new playlists.

Pet hate?

I can't sit next to noisy eaters. Cereal is not easy for me in the mornings.

Guilty pleasure?

The hotel reviews I am invited to write for my website. Every one feels like an indulgence. I'm so lucky.

Super power?

In real life, I am good at remembering visuals. But my dream super power would be to add and subtract hours to the day. Depending on my mood...

"Nightcap" of choice?

Negroni

Best hotel bed you've ever slept in?

Viceroy, New York last week (and I've been asked this a few times. This time, as I was lying there, I thought, nope, this is it. This is really it.)

Most decadent hotel breakfast?

JK Place Florence, but also a little closer to home would be CUT at 45 Park Lane. Full of men having their power breakfasts, but man they know how to create the most visually beautiful breakfast in London. I asked for a side of avocado and it came glazed and decorated in the most beautiful petals. Crazy.

Dream destination?

At the moment, Marrakesh. My dream destinations are usually sparked by hotels which have caught my eye...

Top travel essentials you always pack?

With the aid of a killer luggage system, courtesy of Smythson and Globetrotter, I'm getting better at this now. First in is what I'll want on the other side, so...
- my monogrammed Classic Gatsby PJs
- Tea Bags
- Chargers
- Travel blanket

Pillow Talk: Sophie Paget Steavenson

Sophie wearing Pink Neon Classic PJs

Sophie Paget Steavenson is the pretty face and brilliant brains behind dreamy, ethical beachwear label- Beach Candy. We stole her away from her beloved, one-eyed, Bombay rescue-cat Moshe for a little pillow talk....

POPLIN designs are inspired by the style of iconic women, often from the '50s and '60s like Bardot and Ingrid Bergman, as well as contemporary icons like Iris Apfel. If you could dip into  anyone's wardrobe, past or present, whose would you choose?

Talitha Getty or Brigitte Bardot would both have had incredibly inspiring wardrobes full of beautiful bikinis and kaftans.

What's on your wishlist from POPLIN?

The Daisy Cotton Shorts Set – I just adore them, they’re perfect for bedtime or pool-time.

We're all about the beauty sleep at POPLIN... Are you an owl or a lark? Late sleeper? Early riser?

I am most definitely a lark but at times a reluctant owl...

Favourite thing to...

- Cook in your pyjamas?

Scrambled eggs on buttery Marmite toast with avocado

- Read in your pyjamas?

I’m currently reading Life after Life by Kate Atkinson

- Listen to in your pyjamas?

I love the radio on whilst reading the Sunday papers

Pet hate?

Nail picking / biting / eating

Guilty pleasure?

Chocolate / Cigarettes / Wine / Sunbathing – the list goes on and on...

Super power?

I’m very bendy! (Can put my legs behind my head and other equally useful things like that)

Best hotel bed you've ever slept in?

It’s a tough one to choose but the Six Senses Lamuu in Maldives is right up there.

Dream destination?

Istanbul is next on my list

Top travel essentials you always pack?

1. Bardot Classic PJs with pink neon trim – they’re so comfy and the perfect pair for mooching about in.

2. A Beach Candy scarf dress that can be flung over a bikini from beach to bar.

3. Eye Mask

4. Cosy jumper or scarf for cold evenings or a flight

This weekend we escaped to Cornwall for a weekend in a cottage, thoughtfully leant as a wedding present. Log fires, Jilly Cooper, a brisk walk along the cliffs followed by the perfect cream tea, rain and then rainbows, delicious seafood for supper at Rick Stein and curling up in my POPLIN PJs....

We love this little feature with Bella Freud on deliciously tempting online store CAVAN.

We have just shot, with Agnes Lloyd Platt, our new collection of amazing POPLIN silk and chambray PJs at the incredible Houghton Hall in Norfolk. I had to keep pinching myself while we were shooting there- it is so beautiful and otherworldly. Here's a sneak peek of what's to follow...

I first had the idea for POPLIN while working as a freelance writer in India, and wanting chic yet comfortable clothes to work from home in. I still find stylish spaces that bridge the gap between private and working functions, really inspiring. This is Lee Radziwiłł at her desk in Paris.

London is endlessly grey at the moment. Weather for getting into pyjamas and watching Scandinavian crime thriller series. Our SS13 shoot on location in verdant Umbria seems like an impossible dream! Here's photographic evidence...

Stolen Summer

A few weeks ago POPLIN headed to NYC during Fashion Week for a flurry of meetings- with old, friendly faces and new, exciting ones.

Then, brimming with the city's infectious energy, we headed to Montauk for a stolen summer night, before heading back to London.

Of course we had to stay at The Surf Lodge... Honestly, our arrival lunch was marred by an almost laughably rude, "wannabe" surfer/waiter and we were feeling a little sceptical. But after an afternoon on the incredible beach (POPLIN shirt slung over swim suit), The Lodge redeemed itself with an evening of the best reggae, delicious cocktails and fresh, Indian summer food, that soothed the soul and gave me the sort of Cloud 9 feeling that lasted all the way back across the Atlantic.

The Eye Has to Travel

Chilly pyjama weather has well and truly hit London, which means two things: POPLIN pyjamas, obviously, and the cinema. And what a cinema the Hackney Picture House is!? Spectacularly big and comfortable! And showing Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel which is a sheer delight.

The documentary cuts together old footage and images that glide across the screen like a digitalised version of a clunky, lecture hall slide show; and amuses with Vreeland's more-is-more approach to the aesthetic and emphatic mode of speech.

Everyone who knew her (bar her children perhaps) professes to have been invigorated by her company, her sheer presence, and an hour or so in the cinema with her has much the same effect.

Vreeland was full of witty, facetious and esoteric responses to the world, but my favourite was her attitude to beauty: make the most of your faults. If one has a long nose, celebrate it! Be photographed in profile! A little taller than is conventionally "feminine"? Wear skyscraper heels!

She had a sincere appreciation of variety and individuality. And the people she styled and featured in her magazine (she was editor of Harper's and then Vogue) always looked like themselves, not a version of anybody else. It truly is a liberating way to think about fashion and about beauty.

Autumn Obsession

There is definitely an autumn nip in the air that makes us want to get into our candy striped POPLIN Iris Classic PJs and snuggle up to watch the new series of Downton Abbey or 'don't look now' French cop series Engrenages a.k.a. our latest obsession.

Playing Games

For the Spring Summer '13 season POPLIN went to Umbria in Italy to shoot our lookbook. We were lucky enough to borrow the absolutely beautiful Casa Fizia, surrounded by lavender, olive groves and gentle Umbrian countryside.

The styling flowed so naturally as we put together the looks as girls on (an almost) holiday, wanting to feel glamorous and grown-up, with the feeling of effortlessness that a sun tan and dips in the pool naturally bestow. That meant silk kimonos slung over bikinis, cotton nightshirts for al fresco breakfasts and silk pyjamas for a sunset cocktail.

But the upcoming collection also has a graphic dimension that was echoed in the lines of the tennis court. The product shots were the last thing we shot and we'd pondered all week about where to shoot them: on the patchwork stone work of the house? Back in London in an airless studio? The verdant tennis court with the Italian sun as natural spot-lighting dawned on us as the perfect location.

A teaser for now... We can't wait to share the collection with you soon!

Cooking in Your Pyjamas: Behind the Scenes of SS13 Shoot

A 'behind the scenes' peek into the kitchen of our SS13 shoot in Italy's beautiful Umbria.

We had lots of looks to shoot from the new POPLIN SS13 collection, but we made sure that we took time everyday for a relaxing lunch and supper, round the kitchen table or under the lovely loggia overlooking the olive grove that surrounded the incredible house we were lucky enough to be shooting at. It made for a very civilised shoot, recipes shared amongst the team and new friendships forged.

Favourites were a simple breakfast of figs (picked straight from the tree! I know- we were spoilt!) with natural yogurt and a swirl of berry compote;and a salad, copied from a dinner party at a friend's house back in London and recreated for our grateful team in Italy! Toasted pine nuts + sliced ripe peaches+ rocket+ torn mozzarella + balsamic dressing = heaven!
